Jacques Loussier, the celebrated French jazz pianist and composer, passed away on March 5, 2019, at the age of 84. He was best known for his innovative interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach's works through his iconic Play Bach series.

Born in Angers, France, on October 26, 1934, Loussier's musical journey began at a young age. He studied classical piano and composition before embracing jazz, influenced by artists like Oscar Peterson and George Shearing. In the 1950s, he formed the Jacques Loussier Trio, which quickly gained recognition for its unique fusion of jazz and classical music.

In 1959, Loussier embarked on a groundbreaking project that would define his career: reimagining Bach's compositions in a jazz idiom. His Play Bach series, featuring the trio's dynamic interplay of piano, bass, and drums, introduced Bach's timeless melodies to a new audience and captivated listeners around the world.

Loussier's career spanned over six decades, during which he released numerous albums, including collaborations with classical musicians such as the Orchestre de Chambre Jean-François Paillard. His artistry earned him accolades, including the Grand Prix du Disque de l'Académie Charles Cros and the Grand Prix de la Musique Symphonique de l'Académie du Disque Français.

Loussier's death has left an irreplaceable void in the world of music. His innovative spirit and love for Bach's compositions will continue to inspire generations of musicians and listeners alike. As his daughter Hélène Loussier Oziouls noted, "His music will live on, a testament to his genius and the enduring power of his interpretations."
