Sheila Jackson Lee, Longtime Democratic Congresswoman, Dies at 74

Sheila Jackson Lee, a trailblazing Democratic congresswoman from Texas, has passed away at the age of 74. Lee served 18 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Texas's 18th congressional district since 1995.

Throughout her decades-long career, Lee was an unwavering advocate for Black Americans. She co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and served as its chair for several terms. Lee also championed legislation addressing racial inequality, including voting rights, education, and economic justice.

In addition to her work on racial justice, Lee was a strong advocate for women's rights. She played a key role in the passage of the Violence Against Women Act and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Lee also co-founded the Congressional Women's Caucus and served as its chair.

Furthermore, Lee was a vocal advocate for gun control. In the wake of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, she co-sponsored the Protecting Our Kids Act, one of the most comprehensive gun control bills ever introduced in Congress.
