Cierre Wood Sentenced to Life in Prison for Second-Degree Murder

Former NFL Player Faces Charges for Child Murder

Details of the Case and Sentencing

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Former NFL and Canadian Football League running back Cierre Wood has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years for the second-degree murder charge of his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter, La'Rayah Davis.

Wood, a 32-year-old former running back for the Houston Texans and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, was arrested in May 2019 on charges of first-degree murder, child abuse, and neglect. The charges stem from the death of Davis, who was found unresponsive at Wood's Las Vegas home in April 2019. Wood subsequently reached a plea agreement with prosecutors, pleading guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder.

According to court documents, Wood admitted to hitting Davis several times with a belt, causing fatal injuries. The child's mother, Amy Taylor, pleaded guilty to child neglect for her role in the child's death and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
